NEW DELHI: About 12 lakh family units will not get ration cards this time. The state food and civil supplies department has finalised cards for 28,67,372 citizens, after effectively deleting names of 11,99,780 holders. These are those who either were not legitimate holders or didn't apply for renewal. Distribution of cards to successful applicant family units will be completed by August 31, said commissioner for food, supplies and consumer affairs KS Mehra Friday.
As it now stands, 24,26,901 renewal applicants have been granted cards under the above poverty line (APL) category. Earlier it was for 36,26,824 family units. Incidentally, the department did not change the figures of below poverty line (BPL), antyodaya anna yojna (AAY) and annapurna card holders. The number remains at 3,84,080 and 56,249 respectively.
Thus against the earlier total of 40,67,153 card holding family units, there will be in all 28,67,372 card holding family units in records of the stategovernment. At an exclusive to Times News Network on Friday, an Mehra said, "We have noticed signs of improvement in civic supplies system. There were complaints about We carried out rigorous physical verification this time, with a view to removing any scope for complaints."
Rates have not been changed. BPL card holders will be given wheat at Rs 4.65, rice at Rs 6.15 and sugar at Rs 13.50 a kg and the AAY and AY grouops will get wheat at Rs 2 and rice at Rs 3 per kilogram. To eradicate complaints of general consumers regarding inadequate supplies, non-availability of one or more special food articles (rice, wheat and sugar), cheating in weights and diversion of articles to open market, the department has already launched a Public Audit drive since March last. They are mostly single persons, above 65, destituted and don't have just anything. They are given 10 kg wheat every month free of cost.)
